Star-studded line up heading to Sydney

Nine-time grand slam winner Serena Williams and world no.7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga headline an outstanding playing field for the Medibank International Sydney in January.
Tournament Director Craig Watson today announced one of the strongest fields in the event’s long and illustrious history, which includes 13 of the world’s top 20 women and five of the world’s top 20 men.

Three of the world’s top four women – Serena Williams, Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva head up the women’s field. They will be joined be fellow top ten players Vera Zvonareva, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Also heading to Sydney in the New Year are a number of rising stars in women’s tennis – Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Alize Cornet and Dominika Cibulkova.

Crowd favourites Amelie Mauresmo, Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama are also in the official acceptance list.

The men’s draw boasts two top ten players, French duo Tsonga and Gilles Simon, along with world no.11 David Nalbandian, Igor Andreev, Tomas Berdych, Tommy Robredo, Mardy Fish and Richard Gasquet.

Defending champion Dmitry Tursunov, Spanish Davis Cup star Feliciano Lopez and four time Medibank International Sydney champion and Australian no.1 Lleyton Hewitt (wildcard) have also been included in the field.

Watson is delighted with the strength of the field that will assemble at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on Sunday 11 January, 2009.

“We have an incredible main draw cut-off of 40 for the women and 41 for the men, which we are thrilled about.

“The crowds in Sydney are in store for some outstanding tennis, with the world’s best women competing and Aussie favourite Hewitt taking on the likes of Tsonga and Nalbandian.”

Men’s and women’s wildcards for the event are yet to be decided (with the exception of Hewitt), but will be announced over the coming month.

Tickets are now on sale for the Medibank International Sydney through Ticketek, with ground passes priced at just $9.90 and reserved centre court seating starting at just $24.90. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au or 1300 888 104.

All the best to Lleyton, I hope you can quickly get back to playing some wonderful tennis.

  • Jarrod

The mens is not too flashy. Where is Verdasco, Wawrinka, Tipsarevic, Del Potro etc…..
Women is not too bad…but we do need Ivanovic OR Jankovic!!

  • jenny lawson

    where is rafa nadal?
    i love him
    he is not doing this?

  • Shannon

great line-up, looking forward to it!!!

  • http://colin.com colin

Peng, good luck!Cause you are the last one in main draw!

  • Cassie

Nice women’s field as usual. I hope JJ changes her mind though, she’s good value. And I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Serena decides to turn up, because you just never know with that girl.

I see that the tournament will have a very good quality…

  • http://brisbaneinternational.com.au Ryan

its 2 bad there is no ana ivanovic she had a bad year after french open and wimbledon was bad for here so hopefuly she can get bak 2 good form and cum one dellacqua, stosur, moore, dokic

  • Biscuit

It was a real disappointment to hear about Jelena Jankovic.
JJ must play… it just wont be the same without her. Fingers crossed she turns up!

  • jenny lawson

    is rafa playing in this?
    is he getting a Wildcard

  • mark

we need Jelena Jankovic to come.
yeah fingers crossed she turns up.

  • steven

I agree JELENA PLEASE COME. i m hoping she changes her mind. i love the atmosphere of the crowd when J.J is there. =]

    GO J.J

  • Nikolina

    where is jelena jankovic???

  • Hollymount Hero

It is a little disappointing that Ivanovic will not be here, last year she trained in the off-season here, staying at Manly, considering it was her best year to date I thought she may stick with the winning formula, but alas popularity can change a lot of things. Jankovic was also a regular so for her to not be here is a surprise.

That said it is a HOT womens field and 13 out of the top 20 isnlt bad at all!

The mens draw always struggles to attract al the big names with so many tournaments run at the same time it is always an uphill battle. Still there will be plenty of good tennis, I already have tickets for every day and can’t wait!!!!!!

  • Chris

    Nadal needing a wildcard?
what planet do you live on?

when was the last time Sydney hosted the mens number one?

  • Daniel

Was it when L.H. was no1?
As for the other aussies missing they will require wildcards which are yet to be given out yet so there is still a chance you’ll see more aussies.

  • Matt

Shame Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer couldnt be here

  • Ultras Serbia

    NO JANKOVIC
    NO IVANOVIC
    =\

i was really looking forward to supporting the Serbian girls and create a little bit of an atmospher.. BALKAN STYLE :P

  • Andy

You all in here talk about where is Nadal Federer Ivanovic or Jankovic.

but ok, i live in Denmark and there is no internatinal Tennis. so I will bee happy to see players like Tsonga,Simon,Williams,Safina and Demtieva.

    So Shut up:)

  • reg

Nadal has chosen Sydney instead of Kooyong as his warm up tournament before, it will be disappointing that Sydney lose this chance to watch him in action as World Number one. Please, Medibank International Sydney, work harder!

  • Leigh

Peter Luczac really should be applauded for all of his efforts on the court. Seems he’s the only aussie male player putting it all on the line & giving it a “fair dinkum go” now days. Luczac’s intensity on the court is what all aussie tennis players young and old should aspire too.

Anyone who seen him play against Sebastian Grosjean at last years event will know exactly where im coming from.

Lleyton Hewitt had the exact same fire early on in his career which saw him become WORLD NO:1
If Hewitt regains that fire and has a proper dig he could easily win MEDIBANK against alot of good players who won’t be playing their preffered surface. PAT RAFTER is another great example of the true aussie competativeness

REAL AUSSIE SPORTSMEN/WOMEN ONLY EVER GIVE IT 100%, so get out there and show them who wants it the most……..

BEST OF LUCK ALL AUSSIES!!!… GO YOU GOOD THINGS

  • Phil

Great Stepanek is here again – he’s my favorite player!!

  • MaryQuiteContrary

Yeh I would love to see Nadal in Sydney, fingers crossed!

  • http://fill.com fill

    na li,elena dementieva,richard gasquet,enough!go~!best wishes!

  • Martin

I think that Serena won’t come. I hope I’m wrong, cause I’d love to see her. But she will cancel this event for sure.

  • http://yahoo.com carol

Where is Andy Roddick? didn’t see his name. I watch tennis mostly because of him. Looking forward to see how it goes with his new coach.

  • axel

    the person “Andy” is right
lot of tennisfans (also me) has to travell thousands of kilometers if they want to visit a tournament
so, people in Sydney, don’t cry just because Nadal or Jankovic don’t go to you, you are still very lucky with this lineup
i would be the happiest man on the planet if i could go to such a great tournament

    greetings from middle-east europe

  • Sunny

I am really excited stapanek and Ancic. Go Ancic…hope he wins. i would love to see hewitt play good as well… And ya right hope serena turns, would be a pleasant surprise if she does. i’ll be supporting her of course. she is stunning on court no matter if she is winning or losing
