Bartoli, Zvonareva out of tournament

Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli and Russian Vera Zvonreva have been forced out of the Medibank International Sydney due to injury and illness respectively.

Bartoli, who is currently world No.17 in the Sony Ericsson WTA rankings, was forced to withdraw from her first round match against Great Britain’s Melanie South after she strained her left calf muscle when the match was 1-1 in the first set.

World No.7 Zvonareva has also pulled out of the tournament due to a gastro intestinal illness. She has been replaced in the main draw by Anastasiya Yakimova.

In women’s singles results, Russian third seed Elena Dementieva has beaten Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 6-1 while Alisa Kleybanova has upset compatriot Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-2.

Slovakian-born Australian Jarmila Gajdosova has moved into the second round at the Sydney International after a straight sets win over Italian Karin Knapp.

Gajdosova, ranked 95 in the world, will now meet world number four Elena Dementieva after the 6-4 6-2 win over Knapp.

Fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua has just stepped onto Ken Rosewall Arena to start her first round match against Italy’s Sara Errani.

2008 Olympic champion Dementieva and fellow seed Caroline Wozniacki are both safely through to the second round but seventh seed Nadia Petrova was beaten by France’s Alize Cornet.
