The two finalists from last year’s Australian Open final, Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, will be lighting up the Ken Rosewall Arena in back to back matches at the Medibank International Sydney.
Djokovic, the world no. 3 and top seed, will take on in-form Croatian Mario Ancic in the first match, scheduled to start at 7.30pm. In the second match, world no. 7 Tsonga will face Finn Jarkko Nieminen.
Djokovic breezed past Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round 6-1 6-2, whilst the big-serving Ancic had a strong win with an upset over the seventh seed Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-2 6-1.
Tsonga easily accounted for Italy’s Simone Bolleli 6-4 6-1 and will now play Nieminen for the second week in a row. The pair played in the round of 16 in Brisbane, with Tsonga victorious in three sets. Nieminen, currently ranked no. 40 on the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings stopped last year’s finalist Chris Guccione.
Tournament Director Craig Watson said the combined star power of the top ten players Djokovic and Tsonga would create an incredible atmosphere in Ken Rosewall Arena on Thursday night.
“Fans heading to the Medibank International Sydney can expect some of the best tennis ever seen at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre”, Watson said.
“To have last year’s Australian Open champion and finalist on court for the night session will be a treat for the tennis-loving public. Great seats are still available for Thursday night, so I encourage Sydney tennis fans to head out to Sydney Olympic Park tomorrow night to see these superstars of men’s tennis.”
