American pair Bob and Mike Bryan have won their first Medibank International Sydney men’s doubles title with a 6-1 7-6(3) victory over Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimojic today.
The second seeded Americans reversed the result of last year’s Tennis Masters Cup doubles final in Shanghai, where Nestor and Zimonjic prevailed in straight sets, and secured a mental edge heading into next week’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
Mike Bryan said entering the match he was extremely keen to avenge last year’s loss in Shanghai.
“It felt good to be the underdogs for once. When we lost that match last year, it really gave us extra motivation to work hard in the off season. We came here pretty excited, and we played every match this week with a lot of energy,” Bryan said post-match.
“We worked on a few things and it paid off today. We’re really happy and excited. It’s a great preparation for the Aussie Open.”
The pair broke said they were both pleased to secure their first Sydney title, which had eluded them for 10 years.
“To get it when we’re 30 years old, it feels good. When we’re dead and gone we’ll be up on that board and be remembered with some of the greats,” Mike Bryan said.
“It’s good to be on the Sydney champions’ board with some of our idols: Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.”
In the women’s doubles final on Friday, Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipei and Peng Shuai of China trounced Australia’s Casey Dellacqua and Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy 6-0 6-1.
The pair started their week in Sydney with a straight sets win over fourth seeds Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs and finished the tournament without losing a set.
