Third seed Elena Dementieva, fresh from winning her 12th career title in Auckland was given a stern test by one of the rising names in women’s tennis, Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska, before securing a place in the semifinals of the Medibank International Sydney.
Dementieva needed two hours 43 minutes to score a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory on the Ken Rosewall Arena.
The Russian was up an early break in the second set but allowed the Polish player back into the match. Radwanska broke serve in the 12th game to win the second set. Dementieva then created 4-1 and 5-2 leads in the deciding set but once again allowed her opponent to rally. Dementieva managed to hold on and closed out the match on her second match point.
In the semifinals she will play either Serena Williams or Carolina Wozniacki.
