2008 men’s singles finalist Chris Guccione has been awarded the third and final men’s main draw wildcard for the Medibank International Sydney, which gets underway this Sunday at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
Guccione, currently ranked just outside the world’s top 100 at 101, set the Medibank International Sydney crowds alight last January with his dominating play and impressive wins against a number of highly regarded opponents.
The left handed Victorian defeated Lleyton Hewitt (no. 6 seed), Tomas Berdych (no. 4) and Radek Stepanek in succession before falling to Russian Dmitry Tursunov in a closely fought men’s final, 6-7(3) 6-7(4).
In recent years the tournament has been a happy hunting ground for the lanky lefthander having scored wins over the likes of Rafael Nadal and Juan Carlos Ferrero on the Ken Rosewall Arena.
Guccione is the last player to receive a men’s singles main draw wildcard, after Hewitt and Novak Djokovic for the January 11 to 17 event.
“I am looking forward to returning to the Medibank International Sydney,” said Guccione.
“Making the final in Sydney was one of the highlights of my year, it’s a great place to play tennis.”
“Chris displayed some outstanding tennis last year and had the spectators cheering for him all week long,” said Tournament Director Craig Watson.
“We are looking forward to having him back this year and hope that the Medibank International Sydney will again kick start his year on the ATP World Tour.”
Guccione joins a number of outstanding names in the men’s draw of the event, including top ten players – Djokovic, Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as well as David Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt and defending champion Dmitry Tursunov.
