Highly rated French youngster Alize Cornet has caused the first upset of the Medibank International Sydney with a straight sets win over seventh seed Nadia Petrova.
The 18-year-old easily accounted for the world No.11, winning 6-2 6-4 in an hour-and-a-half on Ken Rosewall Arena.
Cornet will now play Russia’s Vera Dushevina, who easily accounted for Australian wildcard Emelyn Starr 6-0 6-1, in the second round.
Danish eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki didn’t have any of Petrova’s problems in overcoming her first round opponent, Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.
The world No.12 breezed through the match, winning 6-1 6-2 in less than one hour and 10 minutes.
Wozniacki, the only Dane in the women’s top 400, will now play the winner of the match between France’s Marion Bartoli and British qualifier Melanie South.
Slovakian-born Australian Jarmilia Gajdosova has received a boost on Monday with her first-round opponent Victoria Azarenka pulling out with a virus.
The Brisbane International winner will be replaced in the draw by Italian lucky loser Karin Knapp.
Another Australian in action on Monday, Casey Dellacqua, will also take on an Italian opponent, Sara Errani.
