In a brilliant first day to the 2009 Medibank International Sydney, attendance records have been shattered as crowds poured into the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre and the Ken Rosewall Arena to watch some stunning tennis.
The tournament welcomed 11,650 people through the gates which was more than 5,000 above the Medibank International Sydney’s previous opening day record of 6,500 back in 2001.
“This has been one of the most remarkable days in the history of the Medibank International Sydney,” Tournament Director Craig Watson said.
“We promised that the match between Serena and Sam would be a talking point for the whole tournament and the incredible tennis played by both women has lived up to that.
“Not only did we see one of the most sensational matches in the tournament’s history, but the day was also highlighted by the first match on Ken Rosewall Arena; last year’s finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova had to fight all the way to get past Peng Shuai.
“The phenomenal crowds created the most sensational atmosphere, signalling what promises to be the best Medibank International Sydney ever.”
