Robredo downs Melzer in Sydney

Seventh seed Tommy Robredo is through to the second round of the Medibank International Sydney after a tough tournament opener against Austrian Jurgen Melzer.

The Spaniard overcame a fighting Melzer 6-3 6-4 in an hour and a half in the first men’s singles match of the main draw.

The former Australian Open quarterfinalist will now play the winner of the match between Croatian Mario Ancic and Belgian qualifier Xavier Malisse.

In other men’s singles results, Simone Bolelli was too strong for compatriot Potito Starace 7-6(1) 6-4 while
Jarkko Nieminen beat Feliciano Lopez 6-2 7-6(9) and Michael Llodra downed German Denis Gremelmayr 6-0 6-2.

The only Australian men in the main draw, Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione, play their first round matches on Tuesday.

Top seed Novak Djokovic as well as French duo Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon and Argentina’s David Nalbandian have all been granted byes into the second round at Sydney.

Only one other men’s seed is in action on Monday, with Russian Igor Andreev taking on Canada’s Frank Dancevic.
