Australian favourite, and world number 13, Samantha Stosur begins her 2010 Medibank International Sydney campaign on Monday.

Also taking to Ken Rosewall Arena will be Caroline Wozniacki , Feliciano Lopez and Marcos Baghdatis.

First up on Ken Rosewall Arena, Lopez takes on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in what should be a battle of the big hitters.  Gasquet will aim to maintain his dominance over the Spaniard, and serve up his fifth consecutive win against him.

Stosur follows as she takes on Italian, Flavia Pennetta. This promises to be a close match with Stosur ranked 13 in the world and Pennetta 12. Their last meeting in the final of Los Angeles last year went to Pennetta who like Stosur enjoyed the best year of her career.

NSW wildcard, Nick Lindahl, will then face popular Cypriot and world number 42 Baghdatis.  The 2006 Australian Open finalist had never heard of his Australian opponent, who coincidentally, was the 2006 Junior Australian Open runner-up.

Wozniacki  the number 4 seed and US Open finalist, will begin her Australian summer campaign against China’s Li Na. In their only previous encounter the Dane scored a three set win.

Closing out day two on Ken Rosewall Arena, number 6 seed, Victoria Azarenka will play Sabine Lisicki. Azarenka had a narrow win over her German opponent early in 2009.

In day one of main draw action, reigning French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and defending Medibank International Sydney champion Elena Dementieva, along with Slovak, Daniela Hantuchova all scored  first round victories.

In other results, Australian qualifier, Marinko Matosevic defeated Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1 6-4,  to secure his first ever main draw place on the ATP World Tour. Matosevic will now face Italian Andreas Seppi. Fellow qualifier, Anastasia Rodionova lost her final qualifying match against Japan’s Kimiko Date Krumm 2-6 6-3 6-3.

A full order of play for Monday 11 January 2010, and updated draws are attached.

Very tough first round match! 12 vs 13 in the world.. Unlucky draw for Sam who needs to lift on her performances in the Hopman Cup!

    COME ON SAAAAAAAMMMMM !!!!!! :))

I think the media pressure and home town expectations are having a massive and detrimental effect on Sam. A disappointing result in Perth and a less than promising performance in Sydney today suggests she is underprepared mentally for what lies ahead in Melbourne.

    I hope I'm wrong.

I totally agree. I think the Psychological side of her game is failing her.
