Dementieva claims the title

Dementieva claims the title

Elena Dementieva has claimed her second Medibank International Sydney title tonight after a dominating display against world No. 1 Serena Williams.

The Russian fifth seed scored an impressive 6-3 6-2 win over Williams on Ken Rosewall Arena at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre and was presented with her the trophy by Australian tennis legend Margaret Court.

The 27 year old, who was playing in her ninth Medibank International Sydney, said she was very happy with the result.

She is the first woman since Martina Hingis in 2001 and 2002 to win the Medibank International Sydney in consecutive years.

“I’m very satisfied with the way I was playing today and the whole week,” Dementieva said.

“It’s just great to have a chance to play against the best players in the world this week, especially coming into the Grand Slam.

“Right now I just want to enjoy the moment of winning Sydney.”

Dementieva dominated the match from the opening point, hitting winners from all corners of the court, and grabbed two breaks of serve en route to the first set 6-3.

The second set was a similar affair, with the Russian breaking serve early.

The world No.1, clearly hampered with a leg complaint, had no answers for Dementieva’s punishing groundstrokes and court movement.

After just an hour and 15 minutes, Dementieva closed out the second set 6-2 to take the title.

The women’s doubles final was won by top seeds Cara Black (ZIM) and Liezel Huber (USA) over Tathiana Garbin (ITA) and Nadia Petrova (RUS) 6-1 3-6 10-3.

Yes! Well done Elena! You played a great match and you deserved the win! But…you never know what you're going to get with Serena and just because she lost today don't by any means count her out. She's a champion! :)

Serena and her ego,she has grown to be a poor sport and self serving brat, delusions of grander supported by the American corps of commentators, why don't you tell it like it is? She is bloated, and over indulged, and as long as she doesn't have to move she does well with the one dimensional “big babe bashers',thank goodness Henin and Clijsters are back. Now womens tennis can be interesting.

How many RUSSIAN GRAND SLAMS? DAN? HMMMH. WHAT? DUH?

  • waterway

The Russians are beautiful, you bet! But they are no match for an uninjured Serena. You guys just hate her as if she is the reason why the other players play badly. If they up their game, of course, she will thrash them. It's entirely up to the other players to make women's tennins exciting. Go on Serena and beat them where it matters most.

They are so happy they beat a wounded lioness!!! lol

Congrats to Elena, but you know that Serena is the real deal. She wins when she wants to wins. Case Close.
