Williams to face defending champion in final

World No.1 Serena Williams has battled her way into the final of the Sydney International after edging out Aravane Rezai of France 3-6 7-5 6-4 in a thrilling encounter on Thursday.
Williams looked to be crashing out of the tournament after losing the opening set to an inspired Rezai and then trailing the world No.23 5-2 in the second.
However, the reigning Australian Open champion showed all of her fighting qualities to win five straight games and level the match.
The deciding set was a topsy-turvy battle with both players relinquishing their serves before Williams broke Rezai once again in the ninth game and saw out the match.
The 28-year-old will now face defending champion Elena Dementieva in the final after she defeated Belarusian world No.7 Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-1 in the day’s other semi-final.
Earlier on Thursday, former world No.7 Richard Gasquet booked a semifinal spot for a second successive year after beating Italy’s Potito Starace 6-3 7-6 (9-7).
Gasquet looked in fine touch, showing the class that made him a top 10 player before his two-and-a-half month ban after testing positive to cocaine last year.
The Frenchman has slipped to 53 in the world rankings, but feels he is getting back to his best form and believes he can win the tournament.
“Last year I had to play Nalbandian in the semi-final. It was very hard, so this year maybe my opponent will be not stronger than Nalbandian,” he said.
“But I will try to win. You never know. There are good players, but I will try and get to the final.”
Gasquet will next meet compatriot Julien Benneteau after the world No.45 beat Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-0.
